The versatile Scottish actor who conquered both crime drama and the wizarding world
In short: From playing a forensic psychologist to a beloved half-giant, Robbie Coltrane’s career spanned comedy, gritty drama, and global blockbusters. Beyond the screen, he was a mechanical enthusiast who could dismantle a car engine in minutes and a political rebel known as 'Red Robbie'.
Born Anthony Robin McMillan in Rutherglen, Scotland, in 1950, the actor adopted his professional name as a tribute to the jazz saxophonist John Coltrane. While he studied painting at the Glasgow School of Art, his early life was marked by a rebellion against his conservative upbringing and private schooling. This activism earned him the nickname 'Red Robbie,' reflecting his involvement with groups like Greenpeace and Amnesty International.
Coltrane achieved immense critical success in the 1990s, particularly for his role as Dr. Edward 'Fitz' Fitzgerald in the crime series Cracker. His performance was so impactful that he won the BAFTA Television Award for Best Actor for three consecutive years, from 1994 through 1996, joining Michael Gambon as the only actors to achieve such a feat. His versatility extended to the James Bond franchise, where he played the Russian gangster Valentin Zukovsky in GoldenEye (1995) and The World Is Not Enough (1999).
Global fame arrived via the Harry Potter film series (2001–2011), where he portrayed Rubeus Hagrid. J.K. Rowling famously identified him as her first choice for the role. Away from acting, Coltrane possessed a deep passion for engines and travel. He once drove a 1951 Cadillac across North America in 32 days and demonstrated his mechanical prowess by removing a Trabant engine in just 23 minutes. He passed away in October 2022 at the age of 72.
In his later years, Coltrane continued to garner acclaim, notably for his performance in the 2016 drama National Treasure. Despite facing physical challenges from osteoarthritis, which eventually required the use of a wheelchair from 2019, his influence on British culture remained profound, evidenced by his high ranking in public polls of the UK's greatest television stars.
