From teen idol to heart health advocate, the multifaceted life of Robby Benson
In short: Robby Benson rose to fame as a 1970s teen idol before voicing Disney's Beast and directing episodes of Friends. Yet, his most enduring work may be his advocacy for heart research, fueled by his own journey through four open-heart surgeries to correct a congenital aortic valve defect.
Born Robin David Segal in 1956, Benson transitioned from a child actor to a prominent teenage star in films like Ode to Billy Joe and Ice Castles. His career spanned diverse roles, including voicing the lead in Disney's Beauty and the Beast and appearing in Apple TV+'s Severance. Beyond the screen, he has served as a professor at institutions including New York University and Indiana University, while also composing music and writing novels.
Benson's life was profoundly shaped by a congenital bicuspid aortic valve defect, diagnosed during his youth. This condition necessitated four major open-heart surgeries, beginning in October 1984 with a bovine valve transplant. Following the failure of that valve, he underwent the Ross procedure in 2000, and later, a delicate 'reverse Ross procedure' in 2010 to address complications. These experiences led him to become a vocal advocate for heart research and a public speaker on the often-overlooked reality of post-surgical cardiac depression.
In 2004, Benson channeled his medical experiences into an Off-Broadway play titled Open Heart, for which he wrote the book, lyrics, and music. He later published a memoir in 2012, I'm Not Dead ... Yet!, detailing his medical journey. Benson emphasizes that while the physical trauma of such surgeries remains significant, modern medical approaches have improved in helping patients navigate the healing process and the emotional challenges of recovery, allowing them to reclaim their lives after the operating table.
