How a teen heartthrob escaped a manufactured image to find his true voice
In short: In 2012, Ryan Beatty was a rising star and the face of national campaigns. However, behind this polished pop persona lay a teenager feeling emotionally constrained, trapped by a manufactured identity he did not actually possess. This struggle eventually led to a significant hiatus before his artistic re-emergence.
Rising to prominence in 2011, Beatty was quickly identified by Billboard as one of the fastest-growing artists on social media. By 2012, he was releasing music through Radio Disney and appearing in national AT&T advertisements. However, this early success came with a heavy cost: Beatty later described this period as one where he felt unable to be himself, feeling pressured to maintain the image of a 'straight' teen heartthrob. His early popularity was bolstered by YouTube covers, including a viral version of a Bruno Mars hit. He also released his first single, 'Every Little Thing', in late 2011.
The friction between his public persona and his private reality led to a significant hiatus. Following the dismissal of his managers in 2013, Beatty faced a lengthy lawsuit that halted his musical output for three years. During this hiatus, he experienced a significant internal transformation, announcing his sexuality in June 2016 at age 20. This legal struggle prevented him from releasing any new music until 2016. During that same year, he released the singles 'Passion' and 'Stay Gold'.
Since his re-emergence, Beatty has transitioned from a manufactured pop star to a highly respected collaborator and songwriter. He has worked with the rap collective Brockhampton, Tyler, the Creator, and most notably, Beyoncé. In 2024, his songwriting contributions to Beyoncé's 'Cowboy Carter' helped earn him a Grammy Award for Album of the Year, marking a triumphant shift from his constrained beginnings to artistic autonomy. His recent success includes writing for several tracks on the Cowboy Carter album. This work contributed to the record winning a Grammy for Album of the Year.
