In short: Before he was a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Roger Taylor was studying dentistry in London. Driven by the 'great drum sounds' of The Who, the Queen drummer transformed from a biology student into one of rock's most influential percussionists.

Roger Taylor’s path to rock royalty was anything but linear. Born in King's Lynn in 1949, Taylor’s early musical experiments involved playing the ukulele in a childhood band called the Bubblingover Boys. By age 15, he had joined the semi-professional group Johnny Quale and the Reactions. While he initially trained on the guitar, he pivoted to drums after discovering a natural aptitude for the instrument, heavily inspired by the jazz-infused technique of Mitch Mitchell and the sonic power of Keith Moon.

His academic journey saw him move from studying dentistry at London Hospital Medical College to earning a Bachelor of Science in biology at East London Polytechnic. It was during this period in 1968 that he met Brian May and Tim Staffell through a drummer advertisement at Imperial College, eventually forming the band Smile. This group would later evolve into Queen after the recruitment of Freddie Mercury and John Deacon, a lineup that would define an era of music.

Taylor's versatility extended far beyond the drum kit. A countertenor vocalist and prolific songwriter, he contributed at least one track to every Queen album and penned UK number ones such as 'Under Pressure' and 'These Are the Days of Our Lives'. His career has been marked by a relentless creative output, ranging from his solo albums like 1981's 'Fun in Space' to his 1980s side project, The Cross. Even his biological legacy is notable; his son, Rufus Tiger Taylor, carries on the percussion tradition as the drummer for The Darkness.
