In short: Ranking Roger did not just join the Beat; he gatecrashed his way into the band by jumping on stage to toast during their early gigs. His energetic Jamaican-influenced vocal style became the heartbeat of the group, defining the sound of second-wave ska and leaving an indelible mark on British music.

Born Roger Charlery in Birmingham, the musician began his career as a drummer for the Dum Dum Boys in 1978. His transition to the front of the stage happened organically as he began to toast—a rhythmic vocal style rooted in Jamaican sound system culture—over the music of the Beat. This presence, described by journalist Richard Grabel as the essential looseness and humor that made the band happen, distinguished them from their peers. The Beat released three seminal albums between 1980 and 1982, including the critically acclaimed I Just Can't Stop It.

Following the band's 1983 dissolution, Roger co-founded General Public with Dave Wakeling, achieving success with the single Tenderness. His career was defined by constant collaboration across genres, ranging from a 1981 session with Joe Strummer and Mick Jones of the Clash to working with Sting, Smash Mouth, and the ragga-metal band Dub War. In his later years, Roger returned to the Beat, recording new material like the 2016 album Bounce in his garden studio, The Pod, alongside his son, Ranking Junior.

Roger's influence extended beyond his own discography, as he became a central figure in the multi-cultural explosion of 1980s British pop. He remained active until his final years, releasing solo projects and touring extensively. After a health decline involving brain tumours and lung cancer, he passed away in March 2019 at age 56. His legacy continues through his children, including Ranking Junior, who has kept the music alive through tribute projects and continued performances.
