In short: Rogers Place is more than just a home for the Edmonton Oilers. Since opening in 2016, this multi-purpose venue has anchored a massive downtown redevelopment project known as the Ice District. While it spurred billions in investment, the project also ignited significant controversy regarding homelessness and public funding.

The journey to build Rogers Place was fraught with financial complexity. Initially projected to cost $450 million, the price tag for the full project eventually reached $613.7 million. Funding was a collaborative effort involving the City of Edmonton, the Katz Group of Companies, and various government sources. The city utilized a Community Revitalization Levy and ticket surcharges to cover significant portions of the expense, while naming rights were secured by Rogers Communications in a 10-year agreement finalized in 2013.

Beyond the arena walls, the project catalyzed a rapid transformation of the surrounding area. By December 2015, analysts estimated that $2.5 billion in local development was directly linked to the arena's presence. This surge in activity, dubbed the Ice District, became recognized as the fastest-growing arena district of its kind. However, this rapid growth brought social challenges. Local agencies like Boyle Street Community Services raised alarms about the displacement of the homeless population, criticizing city officials for inaccurate data and ineffective mitigation strategies.

Since its inaugural concert in September 2016, the venue has hosted major sporting milestones, including the Oilers' return to the playoffs after an 11-year absence. It also served as a critical hub for the NHL during the 2020 pandemic-era postseason. More recently, the arena has expanded its reach, hosting the first Professional Women's Hockey League game in Edmonton in February 2025, drawing over 17,000 fans. The arena remains a central, if debated, pillar of Edmonton's modern identity.
