From a small accounting school to a modern university, the evolution of RMU
In short: Founded in 1921 as a modest vocational school for accountancy, Robert Morris University has transformed into a comprehensive institution. Today, it balances professional training with academic research, serving thousands of students through a diverse array of degree programs and specialized centers that bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry.
The institution began as the Pittsburgh School of Accountancy, established by Andrew Blass. By 1935, it adopted the name of the American Revolutionary financier Robert Morris. The school underwent significant physical and academic expansion over the decades, moving from downtown Pittsburgh to a 230-acre campus in Moon Township in 1962. It achieved university status in 2002, marking a transition from its origins as a junior college to a degree-granting institution that now offers 60 undergraduate and 35 graduate programs.
Modern RMU is defined by its focus on professional readiness and specialized accreditation. It is the first university in Western Pennsylvania to earn AACSB accounting accreditation and maintains various industry-aligned certifications, including cloud computing through Amazon Web Services. The university has also attracted significant philanthropic investment, such as an $18 million gift from the Kent Rockwell family in 2022 and a $3 million scholarship fund established by Netflix CEO Reed Hastings to support underrepresented students in technology and mathematics.
Beyond academics, the university maintains a robust extracurricular culture, featuring over 160 student organizations and NCAA Division I athletics. The campus infrastructure includes the UPMC Events Center and the Island Sports Center, which serves both the university and the public. With a history of leadership that includes its first African-American president, Christopher B. Howard, and its first female president, Michelle L. Patrick, the university continues to adapt its mission to meet contemporary workforce demands while maintaining its roots in the Pittsburgh region.
