From Marine to Hollywood titan: The enduring influence of executive Ronald Meyer
In short: Ronald Meyer holds the record for the longest studio reign in Hollywood history. After co-founding the powerhouse Creative Artists Agency, he spent 25 years leading Universal Studios through six ownership changes. His career, spanning from a humble office with folding chairs to global media dominance, redefined modern talent representation.
Born in 1944 to parents who fled Nazi Germany, Meyer’s trajectory was unconventional. He dropped out of high school at 15 and served in the United States Marine Corps from age 17 to 19. A novel about the talent industry, The Flesh Peddlers, inspired his pivot to agency work in 1963. By 1975, he and his partners launched Creative Artists Agency (CAA) using simple card tables and folding chairs, eventually growing it into the industry's preeminent talent firm.
In 1995, Meyer transitioned to Universal Studios, where he served as President and COO until 2013. His tenure was marked by remarkable stability despite the studio undergoing six ownership changes during his 25-year run. Under his leadership, Universal produced an average of 17 films annually, with over 40 titles grossing more than $200 million worldwide. Notable successes included Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind, while he personally cited Brokeback Mountain and United 93 as projects he was most proud of for their social impact.
Meyer’s influence extended beyond film production into the physical expansion of Universal Theme Parks. He was instrumental in securing the Harry Potter license from Warner Bros., which transformed the parks with the creation of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Following his departure from NBCUniversal in 2020, Meyer continued his career in international film, becoming co-CEO of the European company Wild Bunch in 2021 and advising the Doha Film Institute. His legacy remains a cornerstone of the modern entertainment landscape, recognized by awards from the Producers Guild of America and the Publicists Guild of America.
