The actor who lived in a tent after a Hollywood premiere
In short: Rory McCann is a household name for his roles in Game of Thrones and Hot Fuzz, but his life off-camera is defined by a radical rejection of conventional success. From bridge painting to living in a tent in Iceland, his career is a study in transient existence.
Rory McCann’s path to stardom was anything but linear. Born in Glasgow in 1969, he spent his early years working as a bridge painter on the Forth Road Bridge, a landscape gardener, and a carpenter. Even his entry into the film industry was marked by a humorous failure: he was fired from the 1988 film Willow for laughing during takes. It wasn't until 1998 that he received formal acting training from Robert Parsifal Finch in Glasgow.
His breakthrough came in 2002 when he won a Scottish BAFTA for his role in The Book Group, a performance that eventually led to major international projects like the 2004 film Alexander, which required grueling training in the African desert. Despite his high-profile roles—including portraying Sandor "The Hound" Clegane for seven seasons of Game of Thrones—McCann maintains a lifestyle that stands in stark contrast to typical celebrity life.
He describes his existence as solitary and transient, often choosing to live on his boat or in locations lacking modern conveniences. This commitment to a non-traditional life was exemplified in 2006 when he traveled to Iceland with Gerard Butler for the premiere of Beowulf & Grendel. After losing his apartment, he spent a year in Iceland, living part of that time in a tent while working as a carpenter. McCann’s diverse background also informs his artistic range. Prior to his acting career, McCann attended the Scottish School of Forestry as a painter; he also led the late group Thundersoup, performing on the mandolin and banjo. This blend of manual labor, musicality, and nomadic living provides a unique context for an actor who has appeared in everything from the BBC docudrama Heroes and Villains to voicing Megatron in Transformers: EarthSpark.
