From Westeros to the stage: the unconventional career path of actor Jack Gleeson
In short: Best known for his chilling portrayal of Joffrey Baratheon, Jack Gleeson has navigated a career defined by deliberate pivots. After achieving global fame, he stepped away from the screen for six years to focus on theatre and academic pursuits, proving that an actor's trajectory is rarely a straight line.
Born in Cork in 1992 and raised in Dublin, Jack Gleeson began his acting journey at age eight through the Independent Theatre Workshop. Before his breakout role in the HBO series Game of Thrones, he appeared in films such as Reign of Fire and Batman Begins. His performance as Joffrey Baratheon between 2011 and 2014 earned him critical acclaim, with TVLine naming him Performer of the Week for the episode The Lion and the Rose.
Despite his success, Gleeson maintained a complex relationship with professional acting. In 2012, he expressed a desire to leave the industry for academia, eventually enrolling at Trinity College Dublin to study philosophy and theology. Although he later abandoned his plans for an academic career, he did retire from screen acting in 2014. During this hiatus, he focused on the Dublin-based Collapsing Horse Theatre Company, which he co-founded. The company produced experimental works like the puppet show Monster/Clock and the lo-fi comedy Bears in Space, which toured to New York in 2016.
Gleeson’s return to the screen in 2020 marked a new chapter in his career. Since then, he has appeared in diverse projects including the film In the Land of Saints and Sinners, the series Sex Education, and the 2025 productions of The Sandman and House of Guinness. Outside of his professional life, Gleeson has been active in public discourse, notably supporting the 2018 campaign to legalise abortion in Ireland. He married Róisín O'Mahony in 2022 and currently divides his time between London and Dublin.
