How a rugged Scottish sheepdog became a Victorian fashion icon
In short: Once a powerful, high-endurance worker capable of trekking 100 miles in a single day, the Rough Collie has undergone a dramatic transformation. From the rugged highlands of Scotland to the royal courts of Queen Victoria, discover how breeding and celebrity changed this breed forever.
The Rough Collie’s lineage is a blend of distinct regional histories. The breed descended from a hardy Scottish variety, built for strength and guarding highland sheep, and a smaller, more agile Welsh variety used for herding goats. When these dogs were brought to the Birmingham market, they were interbred with English sheepdogs, creating the diverse coat lengths we see today. During the Industrial Revolution, breeders may have even introduced Borzoi DNA to achieve a more 'noble' facial structure, a feature that remains a hallmark of the breed.
The breed's status shifted significantly after Queen Victoria adopted a Collie she encountered at Balmoral Castle, turning the dog into a high-fashion accessory. This period of intense breeding for shows altered the dog's physical standard. In the UK, the breed has become smaller over time, whereas the US standard has maintained a larger size, typically between 24 and 26 inches. While the breed's role in the UK has transitioned from serious herding to companionship, a resurgence of the working Collie is currently being seen in parts of Europe and the United States.
Despite their fame through characters like Lassie, modern Collies face complex genetic challenges. Breeders must navigate issues such as Collie eye anomaly (CEA) and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), which can lead to blindness. Other concerns include hip dysplasia and a specific sensitivity to the drug ivermectin due to the Mdr1 gene. While some health issues are managed through rigorous screening, others, like epilepsy or thyroid disorders, remain difficult to address through DNA testing alone.
