In short: Before 1992, the Royal Rumble was a battle royal with no prize. That changed on January 19, 1992, when the vacant WWF Championship became the ultimate reward, fundamentally altering the event's importance and setting the stage for a new era of high-stakes storytelling.

The 1992 Royal Rumble, held at the Knickerbocker Arena in Albany, New York, was the fifth annual event produced by the World Wrestling Federation. It marked a significant shift in the match's format: for the first time, the winner was awarded the vacant WWF World Heavyweight Championship. This title had been stripped from Hulk Hogan following two controversial title switches between Hogan and The Undertaker during the 1991 Survivor Series and the Tuesday in Texas pay-per-view.

The match featured 30 participants who entered at timed intervals, with a new wrestler appearing approximately every two minutes. To ensure the main stars remained in the match longer, WWF President Jack Tunney granted Hulk Hogan and The Undertaker an advantage in the random draw, ensuring they entered between numbers 20 and 30. After entering at number three, Ric Flair secured victory by outlasting Sid Justice, marking the first time anyone survived a match exceeding one hour.

The event was notable for its complex production and storyline developments. During the live broadcast, Sid Justice's elimination of Hogan was met with cheers from the audience, despite the scripted intent for Justice to 'sneak up from behind.' Consequently, the original commentary by Gorilla Monsoon was edited out of future replays, replaced by new comments condemning Justice's actions. This event also catalyzed several long-term storylines, including the feud between Flair and Randy Savage, and the villainous turn of Sid Justice.
