In short: Before 1993, winning the Royal Rumble offered no direct prize. That changed on January 24, 1993, when a new rule transformed the 30-man battle royal into a high-stakes gateway to the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania.

The 1993 Royal Rumble, held at the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, California, marked a pivotal shift in professional wrestling history. Although it had been a yearly pay-per-view since 1989, the 1993 version added a rule that is now the match's norm: the victor secures a WWF Championship bout at WrestleMania IX. Such a reward was unprecedented, as the 1992 edition had instead offered the vacant title. This change established a standard that remains a staple of the annual event today. Previously, the 1992 winner was simply awarded the vacant title.

The event featured six matches, including a dark match where Doink the Clown defeated Jim Powers. In the televised portion, Shawn Michaels successfully defended his WWF Intercontinental Championship against Marty Jannetty, despite interference from Sensational Sherri. In the championship match, Bret Hart retained his WWF Championship by forcing Razor Ramon to submit using the Sharpshooter. The night also saw the WWF debut of Lex Luger, formerly of the World Bodybuilding Federation. The Steiner Brothers also competed in the opening televised match, where Scott secured a victory for his team. Additionally, the Big Boss Man faced Bam Bam Bigelow in a contest decided by a diving headbutt.

The main event's structure relies on a modified battle royal format. Rather than all 30 participants starting in the ring simultaneously, they enter at two-minute intervals. The 1993 match began with Ric Flair and Bob Backlund, two former champions, setting the stage for a chaotic sequence of eliminations and rivalries, such as the early exit of Papa Shango and the intense confrontation between Mr. Perfect and Ric Flair. The match featured several notable eliminations, including the exit of Virgil and Mr. Perfect. These early moments set the tone for the high-stakes battle royal.
