Why this rumpled London barrister refuses to ever plead his clients guilty
In short: Horace Rumpole is a middle-aged London barrister who finds his greatest joy defending underdogs at the Old Bailey. Known for his battered hat, cheap cigars, and a penchant for quoting Wordsworth, he operates on a strict moral code: he never enters a guilty plea, regardless of the evidence against his clients.
Created by writer and barrister John Mortimer, Rumpole is a fixture of the British legal system, specifically the Central Criminal Court, or Old Bailey. He is a self-described hack who rejects the prestige of becoming a Queen's Counsel or a judge, preferring the trenches of criminal defense. His character was inspired by a chance encounter Mortimer had with James Burge QC in the early 1970s, during which Burge confessed to being an anarchist at heart.
Rumpole’s professional life is defined by his commitment to the presumption of innocence. He adheres to the principle that it is preferable for many criminals to escape justice than for a single innocent person to be wrongly convicted. Consequently, he refuses to make deals for lesser charges or prosecute the accused. He only breaks his 'never plead guilty' rule if he possesses absolute, undeniable knowledge of his client's guilt, a rare occurrence that he treats as a moral burden.
Beyond the courtroom, Rumpole navigates a complex personal life, including his marriage to Hilda, whom he privately nicknames 'She Who Must Be Obeyed' after a character in H. Rider Haggard’s novel She. His daily routine involves visiting Pomeroy’s wine bar on Fleet Street to drink questionable red wine. While his biographical details shifted over the 29-year span of the books, his core identity as a stubborn, poetry-loving defender of the criminal classes remains a constant, satirical look at the realities of the British legal world.
