In short: Originally commissioned in 1988, the nuclear-powered Admiral Nakhimov has spent more time in dry dock than at sea. After a massive, multi-decade modernization effort, this colossal warship is finally emerging with hypersonic capabilities, aiming to reclaim its status as one of the most formidable surface combatants in the world.

The Admiral Nakhimov, a Project 1144 Orlan-class battlecruiser, was laid down in 1983 and commissioned in 1988 as the Kalinin. Designed to counter NATO carrier strike groups and submarines, the vessel is a behemoth, displacing 28,000 tons when fully loaded. Its unique combined nuclear and steam propulsion system—utilizing two nuclear reactors and oil-fired boilers—allows it to reach speeds exceeding 30 knots. This design was the result of a 1971 decision to expand the ship's capabilities beyond simple anti-submarine warfare, rejecting smaller proposals in favor of a massive, heavily armed platform.

Following the end of the Cold War, the cruiser saw limited deployment, with its last independent voyage occurring in 1997. In 1999, it was towed to the Sevmash shipyard for repairs, marking the beginning of an intermittent and protracted refit process. Over the next quarter-century, the project faced numerous delays, funding shortages, and shifting strategic requirements. While initial plans for a return to service were frequently pushed back, the modernization aimed to transform the vessel into a modern powerhouse, replacing aging systems with advanced technology.

The extensive refit includes a significant upgrade to the ship's offensive and defensive suite. The modernized Admiral Nakhimov is slated to carry 176 vertical launch system tubes, including capacity for Zircon hypersonic anti-ship missiles and Kalibr cruise missiles. Defensive capabilities have been bolstered with navalized S-400 systems and the Ka-27M helicopter variant, which features enhanced network-centric capabilities. By 2026, the ship had begun final sea trials, signaling the culmination of a complex, decades-long effort to modernize a relic of the Soviet era for contemporary naval warfare.
