The martial arts icon born from a discarded leather jacket concept
In short: Before becoming a video game legend, Ryu was nearly a Caucasian man in a leather jacket. Instead, designer Takashi Nishiyama drew inspiration from martial artist Mas Oyama to create a karate practitioner whose very name is a tribute to his own.
Ryu's identity is deeply rooted in the life and philosophy of Mas Oyama, the protagonist of the manga series Karate Master. Nishiyama, who grew up watching the series, sought to create a narrative-driven experience similar to a film or novel. This inspiration extended to Ryu's rivals as well; for instance, the character Sagat was influenced by a Muay Thai martial artist from the same manga series.
The character's design has undergone significant evolution. While his white gi remains a defining characteristic intended to signal a karate master at first sight, his appearance has shifted from a young fighter to a more muscular, skilled practitioner. In Street Fighter 6, Ryu received a major redesign inspired by his master, Gouken, featuring a beard and a Buddhist robe known as a kasaya, as well as sandals instead of being barefoot.
Central to Ryu's journey is the struggle against his own darkness. This internal conflict is manifested through alter egos like Evil Ryu—a version where his evil intent is awakened—and Kage, a separate entity that serves as the physical embodiment of that intent. While some critics have viewed the use of these corrupted archetypes as repetitive, Ryu's quest to master this dark nature is a primary driver of his character arc.
Ryu's signature moves also have diverse origins. The Hadoken energy attack was inspired by the 'wave motion gun' from the 1970s sci-fi anime Space Battleship Yamato. In contrast, his Shoryuken and Tatsumaki Senpukyaku were based on actual martial arts movements, exaggerated for the game. Interestingly, in the original Street Fighter, Ryu and his rival Ken were programmatically identical, with Ken's Shoryuken only being slightly weaker due to a software mistake.
