In short: Released in 2022, the Saints Row reboot aimed to ground the series in a fresh, balanced tone. Despite strong initial sales, the game faced a polarized reception and technical struggles. It ultimately became the final project for its developer, Volition, marking a dramatic conclusion to a long-running franchise history.

The 2022 Saints Row reboot, developed by Volition and published by Deep Silver, sought to pivot away from the increasingly absurd, reality-defying tone of 2013's Saints Row IV. Developers aimed to recapture the blend of drama and comedy found in earlier entries, drawing inspiration from action films like John Wick and Baby Driver. Set in the fictional, Las Vegas-inspired city of Santo Ileso, the game follows four friends who form a criminal organization to seize power from three rival factions: the vehicle-obsessed Los Panteros, the anarcho-communist Idols, and the high-tech Marshall Defense Industries.

While the game introduced improved vehicular combat and a detailed character creator, its launch was marred by significant technical issues and criticism regarding its writing. Major outlets described the game as barely playable at release, and reviewers noted that it struggled to live up to the legacy of its predecessors. Although pre-order sales initially exceeded expectations and the game reached over 1 million players by October 2022, the financial performance did not meet the high return on investment anticipated by parent company Embracer Group.

The fallout from the game's reception was swift. In November 2022, Embracer Group acknowledged that the title had polarized the fanbase and failed to meet full expectations. Volition was subsequently transferred to Gearbox Entertainment in an attempt to stabilize the studio. However, this effort was short-lived; in August 2023, Embracer Group shuttered Volition entirely. This closure turned the 2022 reboot into the studio's final game, ending a development legacy that had included the entire Saints Row series and the 2017 spin-off Agents of Mayhem.
