In short: Salem Saberhagen is far more than a simple household pet. Once a human warlock, he received a 100-year sentence from the Witches’ Council to live as a cat after his failed attempt at global domination. This transformation has evolved through decades of comics, sitcoms, and dark reboots.

The character of Salem Saberhagen first appeared in 1962 in Archie's Mad House #22, created by George Gladir and Dan DeCarlo. In these early comic iterations, Salem was depicted as a standard orange cat that did not speak. Nevertheless, his history was heavily revised after the 1990s live-action Sabrina the Teenage Witch sitcom made his identity as a former warlock popular.

In the popular sitcom, Salem's backstory was adjusted to explain his feline state as punishment for his megalomaniacal ambitions for world domination. The show's version of Salem is known for his rapier wit, sarcasm, and tendency to give Sabrina Spellman bad advice. While he possesses a deep emotional attachment to the Spellmans, his ambitions include regaining his magical powers, achieving celebrity status, and returning to human form.

The character's nature varies significantly across different media. In the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Salem is portrayed as a familiar rather than a former human, acting as a conscience for Sabrina. In the 1990s live-action television film, his sentence was attributed to using magic to make a mortal love him. Across various adaptations, the character has been voiced by different actors, including Nick Bakay in the sitcom and Luke Cook in a specific episode of the Netflix series.

The production of the sitcom involved complex technical work to bring the character to life. To support animal rights, the creators used a combination of trained cats—named Elvis, Lucy, Salem, and Witch—and animatronic models. By 1998, these mechanical puppets were controlled by three puppeteers capable of manipulating the character in more than 30 different ways.
