How a former college dropout built a thriving independent streaming empire from comedy ruins
In short: Sam Reich transformed a struggling digital comedy brand into a successful, fan-supported streaming service. By acquiring CollegeHumor from IAC in 2020 and rebranding it as Dropout, Reich navigated a precarious industry shift. His journey from a teenage dropout to a media CEO offers a masterclass in audience loyalty and creative autonomy.
Born in 1984, Sam Reich began his career by founding the internet comedy group Dutch West after leaving high school in 2000. His path shifted significantly in 2006 when he joined CollegeHumor as Director of Original Content. Over the following years, Reich ascended to President of Original Content, overseeing the 2009 launch of The CollegeHumor Show on MTV and later establishing the production company Big Breakfast in 2014. This era saw the team produce various projects for networks like TruTV, Comedy Central, and YouTube Red, while collaborating with figures ranging from Weird Al Yankovic to Michelle Obama.
The pivotal moment for Reich came in 2020, when he acquired CollegeHumor from IAC, forming the new entity CHMedia. This acquisition included the streaming platform Dropout. Despite the difficult circumstances of the sale, which involved significant layoffs, Reich maintained high levels of support from both his community and former staff. Kate Knibbs of Wired noted in 2020 that the praise for Reich from former employees was unanimously effusive, a rarity in the wake of corporate restructuring. Reich directly appealed to fans to sustain the company through subscriptions, a strategy that proved vital to the platform's survival.
Under Reich's leadership, the brand underwent a final evolution in 2023, when he announced the retirement of the CollegeHumor name in favor of the Dropout brand. Today, Reich serves as the CEO and majority stakeholder, continuing to host popular programs such as Game Changer and Make Some Noise. His career has been recognized by industry lists, including Forbes 30 Under 30 and a multi-channel network 40 Under 40. Beyond his professional life, Reich is married to actress and writer Elaine Carroll, with whom he has collaborated on projects like the web series Very Mary-Kate.
