How a Canadian correspondent became the first woman to host late-night satire
In short: After twelve years as the longest-serving regular correspondent on The Daily Show, Samantha Bee broke a glass ceiling. In 2016, she debuted Full Frontal, becoming the first woman to host her own late-night satire show, a move that transformed her from a topical commentator into a global media force.
Samantha Bee's ascent in American television was marked by her tenure on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Joining the program on July 10, 2003, she became the show's first non-American citizen correspondent. For five years, she remained the sole female correspondent on the program until Kristen Schaal joined in March 2008. By 2011, Bee had surpassed Stephen Colbert to become the show's longest-serving regular correspondent. She began her journey in sketch comedy as a founding member of the all-female troupe The Atomic Fireballs. Before her television success, she even toured as the lead in a stage production of Sailor Moon.
Her transition to hosting Full Frontal with Samantha Bee on TBS in 2016 represented a significant milestone in late-night television. Beyond her role as host, Bee sought to influence industry standards by implementing a hiring process designed to create a more diverse staff than is typical for the genre. The world acknowledged her impact in 2017 after Time included her on their list of 100 most influential people. She also served as an executive producer for the TBS comedy series The Detour. This production was a collaborative effort alongside her husband, Jason Jones.
Bee's career has been characterized by both political engagement and professional resilience. In 2017, her 'Nasty Woman Shirt' campaign successfully raised over $1 million for Planned Parenthood. While her show was eventually canceled by TBS in 2022 due to business-based decisions, Bee has continued to expand her reach through projects like the podcast Choice Words and her 2024 off-Broadway one-woman show, How to Survive Menopause. Her creative output extends to literature, having authored the book I Know I Am, But What Are You? in 2010. Additionally, she has explored theatrical performance through her 2024 one-woman production.
