In short: Though officially classified as frigates, these German warships pack the capabilities of destroyers. Built for advanced air defense, they utilize sophisticated radar and missile systems to track and neutralize threats. Recently, they have been deployed to the Gulf of Aden to protect commercial shipping from complex, modern aerial attacks.

The Sachsen-class frigates were developed to replace the aging Lütjens-class destroyers, representing a significant leap in the German Navy's post-Cold War capabilities. Commissioned in the late 1990s, the three ships—Sachsen, Hamburg, and Hessen—were designed with stealth features to deceive radar and acoustic sensors. Their hull design, based on the earlier Brandenburg class, utilizes modular construction to streamline maintenance and allow for future upgrades. With a full-load displacement of 5,690 long tons, these vessels are engineered for stability, using a specialized rudder system that maintains performance even in rough sea states.

At the heart of the Sachsen-class is an integrated air-defense suite centered on the APAR and SMART-L radars. This combination allows for precise target tracking and the simultaneous guidance of multiple semi-active radar homing missiles. The ships are armed with a 32-cell vertical launching system for SM-2 and Evolved Sea Sparrow missiles, alongside point-defense systems for cruise missile threats. While they were originally optimized for anti-air warfare, the German Navy has continuously modernized their sensors, including a 2021 contract to install a new AESA radar system capable of tracking targets at distances exceeding 400 kilometers.

The class has seen extensive international cooperation, frequently integrating into American carrier strike groups for training and interoperability exercises. However, their operational reality is demanding. In early 2024, the frigate Hessen was deployed to the Gulf of Aden for EUNAVFOR Aspides, a mission to defend commercial traffic against Houthi-led attacks. The deployment highlighted both the complexity of modern naval engagement and the risks of misidentification, as the ship notably fired upon a friendly American drone during a high-stakes operation. Despite such challenges, the Sachsen-class remains a cornerstone of Germany's naval defense, with ongoing experiments—such as the 2025 installation of a laser weapon—ensuring they remain at the forefront of maritime technology.
