Why Samir Handanović was feared as the ultimate penalty-stopping specialist in Serie A
In short: Known as Batman for his acrobatic reflexes, Slovenian goalkeeper Samir Handanović redefined defensive reliability in Italy. Beyond his longevity at Inter Milan and Udinese, he became a master of the spot-kick, eventually setting an all-time Serie A record for the most penalties saved by a single goalkeeper in league history.
Born in 1984, Samir Handanović began his professional journey in Slovenia before moving to Italy in 2004 to join Udinese. His early years were defined by a series of loan spells at clubs including Treviso, Lazio, and Rimini, where he honed the skills that would eventually make him one of the most respected goalkeepers of his generation. By the time he returned to Udinese as a starter in 2007, he had established himself as a formidable presence, eventually earning a high-profile move to Inter Milan in 2012.
Handanović’s reputation was built on his extraordinary ability to read and stop penalty kicks. During the 2010–11 season, he saved six penalties, matching a league record that had stood since the 1948–49 campaign. His mastery of the spot-kick continued throughout his tenure at Inter, where he eventually broke the all-time Serie A record for most penalties saved on 17 October 2020, surpassing the previous benchmark held by Gianluca Pagliuca. This specific skill set, combined with his consistency, saw him named Serie A Goalkeeper of the Year three times.
Beyond his individual accolades, Handanović was a central figure in Inter Milan’s resurgence. He was appointed club captain in February 2019 and reached the 2020 UEFA Europa League final. His career was marked by remarkable durability, including reaching 500 Serie A appearances by February 2021 and winning his first league title that May. Despite interest from major European clubs like Barcelona and Manchester United, he remained a fixture in Italian football, celebrated for his shot-stopping prowess and his role in guiding Inter back to the UEFA Champions League.
