In short: Samsung's ambitious tri-folding smartphone arrived with high-end specs and a unique design, only to be discontinued in its primary markets shortly after launch. Despite its short shelf life, the device set new benchmarks for foldable battery capacity and charging speeds, offering a glimpse into the future of mobile hardware.

The Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold represented a significant leap in foldable technology, following years of development and public concept displays. First previewed through the S Flex and G Flex prototypes at the 2022 CES, the device underwent a long gestation period. It was teased during a January 2025 roadmap presentation and later unveiled at the APEC summit in October 2025, before an official press release announcement in December 2025.

Technically, the device was a powerhouse. It featured a 10.0-inch unfolded display with a 4:3 aspect ratio and was powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. It introduced a 5600 mAh battery, the largest ever in a Samsung foldable, and supported 45W wired charging—a first for the series. Despite these innovations, the phone was limited to a single color, Crafted Black, and a sole 16 GB RAM configuration. It launched with Android 16 and One UI 8, backed by a seven-year commitment to OS and security updates.

Market reception was intense; the device sold out immediately upon its January 30, 2026, release in the United States. However, the commercial life of the Z TriFold was remarkably brief. In March 2026, just three months after its initial launch, Samsung announced the discontinuation of sales in both South Korea and the U.S. While the first iteration was short-lived, development of a successor is already underway. Rumored for a 2027 release, the next generation is expected to be thinner and lighter, potentially incorporating new features like a magnetically attached S Pen, as outlined in recent patent filings.
