In short: When Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Flip, it wasn't just a new phone; it was a material science breakthrough. Moving beyond the plastic displays of its predecessors, Samsung introduced a flexible, ultra-thin glass panel designed to withstand the physical rigors of a clamshell design.

Released on February 14, 2020, the Galaxy Z Flip marked a significant departure from the technology used in the original Galaxy Fold. While the Fold relied on dual-layer plastic, the Z Flip introduced an 'ultra-thin' glass panel. This hybrid glass coating, branded as Infinity Flex Display, was manufactured using materials from Schott AG and underwent an intensifying process to enhance both durability and flexibility.

The engineering challenge of a foldable device involves managing the stress of repeated motion. Samsung addressed this by reinforcing the hinge mechanism with nylon fibers to repel dust, rating the mechanism to support up to 200,000 uses. The display itself is a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED panel, complemented by a small 1.1-inch external screen for quick interactions like checking the time or battery status.

Despite the hardware advancements, the device's reception was nuanced. While critics like Jessica Dolcourt of CNET praised the 'Flex mode' functionality, others, such as Sascha Segan of PC Magazine, viewed it as a 'potentially fragile fashion object.' This tension between innovation and durability was a central theme in early reviews, especially regarding the screen's susceptibility to scratches and the device's low repairability score of 2/10 from iFixit.

The Z Flip's impact was reflected in the market, where Samsung's foldable series held an estimated 86% to 87% market share during 2020 and 2021. The device's lifecycle was supported by a commitment to long-term software, with Samsung providing three generations of Android updates, eventually concluding major OS updates with Android 13 in January 2023.
