The shifting borders of a California powerhouse
In short: Once a massive territory stretching toward the Colorado River, San Diego County has undergone profound transformations. From its deep Indigenous roots to its status as a vital international gateway, the region’s boundaries and demographics tell a story of conquest, separation, and rapid growth.
For over 12,000 years, the region was inhabited by various Indigenous groups, including the Kumeyaay, Luiseño, Cupeño, Cahuilla, and Acjachemen. European influence arrived in 1542 when Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo claimed the bay for Spain, though the modern administrative foundations were laid much later. Following Spanish missions and presidios established in 1769, the area became part of Mexico after its independence, before being transferred to the United States via the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
The county's physical footprint has shrunk significantly since its 1850 creation. Originally, it encompassed much of what is now Southern California, including parts of Inyo, San Bernardino, Riverside, and Imperial counties. Through various partitions, such as the 1893 formation of Riverside County and the 1907 separation of Imperial County, the county's reach was reduced. Today, it covers approximately 4,526 square miles, an area larger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined.
Today, San Diego County is a massive demographic engine, ranking as the fifth-most populous county in the U.S. with over 3.2 million residents as of the 2020 census. It serves as a critical component of the largest binational metropolitan area shared by the U.S. and Mexico. This complexity is mirrored in its landscape, which ranges from the densely populated 70-mile coastline to the vast, undeveloped backcountry of the Anza-Borrego Desert and the lush, snow-capped mountains of the east.
