In short: Samba, the son of Krishna and Jambavati, was a figure of both divine origin and profound misfortune. His life was defined by a series of curses—from leprosy to a bizarre pregnancy prank—that ultimately triggered the total destruction of his entire royal clan.

The birth of Samba was preceded by intense spiritual penance. Seeking a son to satisfy his consort Jambavati, Krishna performed rigorous austerities in the Himalayas for six months. During this time, he survived on water, then air, and even stood on his toes. Pleased by these efforts, Shiva appeared in the half-male, half-female Ardhanarishvara form to grant the boon, resulting in the birth of Samba.

Samba's life was marked by repeated transgressions and divine retribution. In one version, he mocked the sage Narada, leading to a curse of leprosy. He was eventually cured after twelve years of penance to the Sun God, Surya, at Mitravana. In another account from the Mausala Parva, Samba's downfall began with a deceptive prank. He dressed as a woman and falsely claimed to be pregnant to trick visiting rishis. This angered a sage, who cursed him to actually give birth to an iron mace (gada).

This curse became the instrument of the Yadu dynasty's demise. Samba gave birth to an iron rod, which King Ugrasena ordered to be crushed and cast into the Prabhas sea. The powder transformed into eraka grass, which was as strong as iron. During a later festival, the Yadavas used this indestructible grass as weapons to kill one another, fulfilling the prophecy of destruction. This chaos eventually led to the death of Krishna himself, when a hunter's arrow, tipped with a piece of the iron, struck him.
