From mission grazing land to a modern corporate hub, the story of San Ramon
In short: Once a quiet expanse of sheep grazing land for Mission San Jose, San Ramon has transformed into a bustling California city. Today, it serves as a major corporate headquarters and a residential center, balancing its urban development with the preservation of regional wilderness and historic agricultural sites.
The land now known as San Ramon was originally inhabited by the Seunen people, an Ohlone/Costanoan group who established homes near local creeks. By 1797, the area was repurposed by Mission San Jose for grazing, and in 1834, it became part of the Rancho San Ramon land grant awarded to Jose Maria Amador. Amador named the area after a Native American vaquero who tended sheep on the property, adding the prefix 'San' in accordance with Spanish naming customs.
The region underwent several name changes throughout the 1800s, including Brevensville and Lynchville, before 'San Ramon' became the official designation in 1873 with the opening of a permanent post office. The arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad's branch line in 1891 further solidified the town's identity. While passenger rail service ceased in 1934, the former right-of-way was eventually repurposed into the Iron Horse Regional Trail, a hallmark of the city's modern infrastructure.
Today, San Ramon is defined by its economic and residential growth, anchored by Bishop Ranch. This master-planned office park, which began major construction in the early 1980s on former farmland, hosts major corporate tenants including AT&T and Chevron. The city also features a significant civic space, City Center Bishop Ranch, designed by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop and opened in 2018. Despite this urban density, the city maintains 58 parks and borders the Las Trampas Regional Wilderness, reflecting a deliberate effort to integrate modern living with the natural topography of the Diablo Range.
