In short: Before it was a primary international hub, San Francisco International Airport was a temporary, experimental project. What began in 1927 as a modest lease of a local estate has evolved into a massive complex, navigating everything from the jet age to massive environmental debates over expanding into the Bay.

The origins of SFO trace back to March 15, 1927, when the City and County of San Francisco leased 150 acres from the Darius Ogden Mills estate. Initially known as Mills Field Municipal Airport, the site was essentially a cow pasture. By August 1930, the airport began expanding significantly, purchasing surrounding land to reach 1,112 acres. The name was simplified to San Francisco Airport in 1931, and the 'International' designation was only added following the expansion of overseas services after World War II.

The airport's history is defined by the technological shifts of the 20th century. The 'jet age' arrived in March 1959 when TWA introduced Boeing 707s nonstop to New York. This era also brought infrastructure milestones, such as the installation of one of the nation's first jetway bridges in July 1959 and the 1964 opening of a 450-foot moving walkway, which was the longest of its kind in the world at the time.

However, the airport's growth has faced significant friction. Due to the close proximity of parallel runways—only 750 feet apart—SFO often faces flight delays during overcast weather. This led to ambitious, yet controversial, proposals in the late 1990s to extend runways using 2 square miles of Bay fill. While planners suggested this could accommodate more traffic, the plans met fierce resistance from environmental groups like the Sierra Club, who feared for the health of the Bay's ecosystem and local habitats.

Today, SFO remains a critical infrastructure piece, serving as a primary hub for United Airlines and a major gateway for transpacific travel. Despite fluctuations in global passenger rankings, it continues to serve as a massive operational engine for the San Francisco Bay Area.
