The Walrus Capital of the World sits on a remote, wind-swept Bering Sea island
In short: Savoonga, Alaska, is a resilient community on St. Lawrence Island, defined by its subsistence lifestyle and deep connection to the Arctic environment. Known as the Walrus Capital of the World, this Siberian Yupik village balances traditional hunting practices with the realities of modern life in a harsh polar climate.
Located on the northern coast of St. Lawrence Island, Savoonga is a testament to survival in the Bering Sea. While the island has been inhabited sporadically for 2,000 years, the modern village emerged in the 1930s near a reindeer camp established in 1916. The community’s identity is anchored in subsistence hunting for bowhead whales, seals, fish, and walrus, a practice that sustains the local economy. The village formally incorporated in 1969 and, under the 1971 Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, gained joint title to most of the island alongside the city of Gambell.
Life in Savoonga is shaped by a polar climate, featuring long, freezing winters that stretch from October through May. The environment is unforgiving; in 1985, the community suffered a tragic loss when eight people died in a single incident involving a swamped skiff and a failed rescue attempt. Despite such challenges, the population has grown, reaching 835 residents by the 2020 census. The community remains a stronghold for the Siberian Yupik language, which is spoken by most residents on the island.
The village’s history is marked by significant demographic shifts. In the late 19th century, a famine between 1878 and 1880 devastated the island, leaving the remaining population almost entirely Siberian Yupik. Today, the village continues to navigate the complexities of remote living, with daily flights from Nome serving as a vital link, weather permitting. While the economy relies on traditional hunting, residents also engage in sectors like education, air transportation, and fishing, reflecting the ongoing evolution of this resilient Arctic culture.
