The golden fabric of emperors has been lost for two millennia
In short: For centuries, a shimmering, lightweight textile reserved for popes and emperors has been nearly impossible to find. Now, researchers have unlocked the secret to its eternal golden glow, proving that its brilliance comes not from dyes, but from the very architecture of light itself.
Historically, sea silk was harvested from the byssus threads of the Mediterranean clam, Pinna nobilis. These fibers, used by the mollusk to anchor itself to rocky surfaces, produced a material famous for its weightless, golden appearance and extreme durability. However, environmental decline and marine pollution have pushed Pinna nobilis toward extinction, leading the European Union to ban its harvesting. This has left authentic sea silk as an incredibly rare luxury, produced only in tiny amounts by a few remaining artisans.
A team of researchers in South Korea, led by Professors Dong Soo Hwang and Jimin Choi from POSTECH, has successfully recreated this legendary fiber. By investigating the pen shell, Atrina pectinata—a species already farmed for food in Korean coastal waters—they found that its byssus threads are physically and chemically similar to those of the extinct-threatened Mediterranean clam. This breakthrough not only revives an ancient textile but also offers a sustainable way to utilize marine waste that was previously discarded.
The most significant discovery involves the fabric's famous luster. The researchers found that the golden color is not the result of pigments or dyes, but of 'structural coloration.' Specifically, the fibers contain layered, spherical protein structures called 'photonin.' Much like the wings of a butterfly or the surface of a soap bubble, these microscopic structures manipulate and reflect light. Because the color is built into the material's physical arrangement rather than applied externally, the golden hue remains remarkably stable and resistant to fading for centuries.
