The underwater restaurant that failed, sparking a marine theme park empire
In short: In 1964, four UCLA graduates set out to build a dining room beneath the waves. When the underwater restaurant concept proved unfeasible, they pivoted to a different vision. This shift birthed SeaWorld San Diego, a massive complex that evolved from a 22-acre park into a global marine entertainment brand.
SeaWorld San Diego opened on March 21, 1964, originally featuring only six attractions, 22 acres of land, and a handful of dolphins and sea lions. The park's initial success was immediate, attracting over 400,000 guests within its first 12 months. This success laid the groundwork for a chain that eventually expanded to Ohio, Orlando, and San Antonio.
The park's ownership has undergone significant transformations. After being established by George Millay, David Demott, Ken Norris, and Milton Shedd, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Inc. acquired the firm. in 1976. It later passed to the Anheuser-Busch Company in 1989, before being sold to the Blackstone Group in 2009. Today, the entity is known as United Parks & Resorts, following a name change from SeaWorld Entertainment in 2024.
The park's attractions have shifted alongside changing public interests. While it once featured theatrical orca shows, San Diego ended these performances in January 2017, replacing them with 'Orca Encounter,' an educational presentation. Modern attractions include high-speed roller coasters like Emperor, the tallest and fastest dive coaster in California, and the Arctic Rescue coaster, which features three launches and reaches speeds of 40 mph.
Beyond entertainment, the site serves as a research and conservation hub. The adjacent Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute conducts marine biology research, while the park itself participates in species relocation efforts, such as the August 2026 arrival of three beluga whales from the closed Marineland of Canada.
