How a piano ballad for a film tribute became a global streaming phenomenon
In short: Commissioned as a final farewell to actor Paul Walker, See You Again defied industry expectations to become a record-breaking hit. Originally conceived as a dance track, the song transformed into a piano ballad that resonated with millions, eventually securing its place as one of the most-streamed tracks in history.
The creation of See You Again began when Artist Publishing Group tasked producers DJ Frank E and Charlie Puth with developing a melody for the film Furious 7. During their first studio session in Los Angeles, the pair initially worked on a synth-heavy dance production. Puth, however, suggested shifting the arrangement toward a piano ballad, drawing personal inspiration from the death of a friend in 2012. The resulting demo impressed the film's production team, leading to the addition of rap verses from Wiz Khalifa that emphasized themes of family.
The song's path to release was unconventional. Atlantic Records considered several established artists for the vocal parts, including Chris Brown, Sam Smith, and Adele, before ultimately choosing Puth. Upon its release in March 2015, the track experienced a meteoric rise. In the United States, it climbed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in just five weeks, eventually holding the number-one spot for 12 non-consecutive weeks. By 2016, it had sold over 4 million copies domestically and was certified 14x Platinum by the RIAA.
Beyond its commercial success, the song set multiple digital benchmarks. It dominated the UK Singles Chart and became the fastest-selling single in the United Kingdom for 2015. Its music video, directed by Marc Klasfeld, became a cultural touchstone, briefly holding the title of the most-viewed video on YouTube in 2017. The song's emotional resonance has ensured its longevity, leading to performances at major events like the 2020 tribute to Kobe Bryant and the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards. In 2026, the composition even received an orchestral reinterpretation by Giacomo Bucci, cementing its status as a lasting piece of modern pop culture.
