In short: The journey of the Lions of Teranga is a narrative of persistent ambition. From early setbacks to continental glory, their path through major tournaments reveals a pattern of overcoming immense pressure. Discover the milestones that defined their rise on the world stage.
Senegal's journey in international football is marked by significant milestones, starting with their first Africa Cup of Nations appearance in 1965, where they finished fourth after losing 1–0 to Ivory Coast. The national team, which operates under the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) and gained independence from France on April 4, 1960, saw its first match on December 31, 1961, against Dahomey (now Benin), resulting in a 3–2 loss. The FSF became affiliated with FIFA in 1962 and a member of CAF in 1963.
Major achievements include reaching the quarter-finals of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, where they notably defeated defending champions France in their opening match. This performance established them as one of Africa's premier teams. Later, they secured their first Africa Cup of Nations title in 2021. Their progression was also evident in the 2019 AFCON, where managed by Aliou Cissé, they reached the final before losing 1–0 to Algeria. Furthermore, they reached the quarter-finals of the 1992 AFCON after hosting the tournament.
The team's success has been punctuated by high drama. In the 2021 AFCON final against Egypt, they clinched their title after Mané scored the decisive penalty in a shootout. Another significant moment was their 2022 World Cup qualification victory over Egypt on penalties, following a 1–1 aggregate draw. More recently, they secured a historic 3–1 win against England on June 10, 2025, marking the first time an African nation defeated England at the senior level. Their participation in the 2026 World Cup included a 5–0 victory over Iraq on June 26, 2026, setting a record for the largest win by an African team in World Cup history.
Despite periods of dominance, the path has included controversies, such as the penalty shootout at the 2021 AFCON final, which led to FIFA fining the federation 175,000 Swiss francs due to fan disorder. The team has also faced setbacks, such as their group stage exit in the 2018 World Cup, and a controversial 2026 AFCON final where a protest walkout led CAF to overturn the result.
