From stolen hockey gear to world champion: the rise of the Krusher
In short: Sergey Kovalev’s path to boxing dominance began with a childhood misfortune. After his ice hockey equipment was stolen and his parents could not afford replacements, he turned to the ring. He evolved into a formidable light-heavyweight force, defined by exceptional punching power and a career spanning nearly two decades.
Born in 1983, Kovalev began his boxing journey at age 11. His amateur career was marked by significant success, including a gold medal at the 1997 Russian Boxing Junior Championship and multiple titles as a senior, culminating in a 195–18 record. By 2009, he transitioned to the professional ranks, quickly earning the nickname Krusher for his aggressive, power-punching style. His professional trajectory saw him capture the WBO light-heavyweight title in 2013 by defeating Nathan Cleverly, marking the first time the Welshman had been knocked down.
Kovalev’s status as a premier fighter was solidified in 2014 when he unified the WBA, IBF, and WBO titles by defeating the legendary Bernard Hopkins via unanimous decision. The fight was a masterclass in dominance; Kovalev won every round on all three judges' scorecards and landed 38 punches in the 12th round alone—a record for Hopkins in his 41 recorded fights. This performance earned him Fighter of the Year honors from The Ring and Sports Illustrated.
The latter half of his career was defined by high-stakes rivalries, most notably against Andre Ward. Their first encounter in 2016 ended in a controversial unanimous decision loss for Kovalev, with many observers and experts debating the fairness of the outcome. The 2017 rematch ended in an eighth-round stoppage victory for Ward. Despite these setbacks, Kovalev remained a central figure in the light-heavyweight division, consistently headlining major televised events and maintaining a reputation as a fighter who thrived on high-pressure, elite-level competition until his retirement in 2025.
