How Sergio Canales navigated a career defined by both brilliance and recurring injury
In short: Sergio Canales emerged as a teenage prodigy in Spain, earning a high-profile move to Real Madrid at 19. Yet, his path was repeatedly interrupted by severe knee injuries. Despite these setbacks, he reinvented himself across multiple clubs, eventually finding success in Mexico before returning to his roots in Santander.
Born in 1991 in Santander, Sergio Canales Madrazo rose through the youth ranks of Racing de Santander. His early promise was evident by 2008, when he helped Spain win the UEFA European Under-17 Championship. By 2010, his domestic form—highlighted by standout performances against Sevilla FC—earned him a six-year contract with Real Madrid for approximately €4.5 million. However, his tenure at the Santiago Bernabéu was brief, limited to 518 minutes of action during a single season.
The trajectory of Canales’ career was frequently altered by physical trauma. After joining Valencia on loan in 2011, he suffered a torn cruciate ligament that sidelined him for six months. Upon his return in April 2012, he suffered a relapse during a Europa League match, leading to another six-month absence. Later, in 2015, while playing for Real Sociedad, he sustained a serious injury to his left knee. These challenges forced him to adapt his game, evolving from a young attacking prospect into a seasoned playmaker who eventually recorded a career-best eight goals for Real Betis in the 2020–21 campaign.
Beyond his club career, Canales was a consistent fixture in Spanish youth setups, winning the 2013 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. He finally made his senior international debut in 2019 under manager Luis Enrique. In 2023, he took his talents abroad to Liga MX club C.F. Monterrey, where he earned back-to-back selections to the Apertura Best XI in 2024 and 2025. Following the expiration of his contract in April 2026, he returned to Racing de Santander, coming full circle 16 years after his initial departure.
