From El Paso to European stardom: the meteoric rise of Ricardo Pepi
In short: In just a few years, a teenager from Texas transformed from a local academy prospect into a multi-million dollar European striker. Discover how a clinical finisher's hunger for goals propelled him through the ranks of MLS to the heights of the Eredivisie.
Ricardo Pepi's journey began in the local leagues of El Paso, Texas, where he started playing at age four. After being scouted at a 2016 tournament, the 13-year-old joined the FC Dallas academy. His ascent through the youth ranks was nothing shortफट: he netted 18 goals in 15 games for the under-13s and followed that with 19 goals in just eight matches for the under-17 side.
His professional breakthrough arrived with rapid intensity. By 2019, Pepi was making waves in USL League One with North Texas SC, notably scoring a hat-trick in his professional debut. His talent quickly earned him a homegrown deal with FC Dallas at just 16 years old. The 2021 season proved to be his breakout year; he became the youngest player in MLS history to record a hat-trick and was honored as the league's Young Player of the Year.
The financial scale of his talent became evident in January 2022, when he moved to Bundesliga club Augsburg for a reported $20 million, making him the most expensive American from MLS to move to Europe at that time. After a productive loan spell at Groningen, he signed with PSV Eindhoven in 2023 for €9 million. While his career has seen highs, including CONCACAF Nations League titles, it has also faced hurdles, such as a collapsed $46 million move to Fulham in early 2026 due to contractual disagreements.
On the international stage, Pepi has been a vital component of the United States senior squad, scoring crucial goals in World Cup qualifying and the Nations League. Despite missing the 2022 World Cup roster, his clinical nature in front of goal remains a cornerstone of the American attack.
