In short: From their 1985 breakthrough to the massive success of 'Stars', the British soul band's discography reveals a journey of chart-topping hits and stylistic shifts. Discover how a single song in 1995 finally secured them their first UK number one.

The British soul band Simply Red established their presence in the mid-1980s. Released in 1985, their first hit, "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)", climbed into the UK Top 20. This was followed by their debut studio album, Picture Book, also in 1985. By 1986, the band achieved significant international success with "Holding Back the Years", a track that reached number one in both Ireland and the US, while peaking at number two in the UK. Their second studio effort, Men and Women, arrived in 1987. Later, the 1989 release A New Flame produced the US number one hit "If You Don't Know Me by Now".

The band's commercial peak arrived in the early 1990s. Their fourth studio album, Stars, released in 1991, became the best-selling album in Europe for two consecutive years. In the UK, this album achieved a 12× Platinum certification. Their ability to reach the top of the charts continued through the decade, with the 1995 single "Fairground" marking the band's first UK number one hit, appearing on the album Life. This success was bolstered by the 1998 release Blue, which featured many covers.

Throughout their career, the band explored various musical directions, from the cover-heavy 'Blue' in 1998 to the stripped-down versions found on 2005's 'Simplified'. A final tour took place throughout 2009 and 2010 after Mick Hucknall declared the group would disband in 2010. Their extensive body of work includes thirteen studio albums, five live albums, and eight compilation albums, alongside a vast collection of singles and music videos. The group also released Love and the Russian Winter in 1999 and the album Home in 2003. Their tenth studio record, Stay, was launched in 2007.
