In short: Formed in Montreal in 1999, Simple Plan evolved from a pop-punk outfit into a global touring force. Beyond their six studio albums, the band achieved unexpected cultural ubiquity by providing the theme song for the rebooted What's New, Scooby-Doo?, cementing their place in the memories of a generation.

Simple Plan emerged from the ashes of a 1993 band called Reset, founded by Pierre Bouvier and Chuck Comeau when they were just 13. After several lineup shifts and a period where Bouvier juggled two groups, the final lineup solidified around Bouvier, Comeau, Jeff Stinco, and Sébastien Lefebvre. They took their name from a 1998 film, A Simple Plan, and signed with Atlantic Records in 2001.

Their debut, 2002's No Pads, No Helmets...Just Balls, became their best-selling record, eventually moving over four million copies worldwide. It established their signature style: downbeat, angst-filled lyrics paired with upbeat, pop-punk melodies. While critics initially pigeonholed them, the band later transitioned toward a more mainstream rock sound with their 2004 follow-up, Still Not Getting Any.... This shift reflected their frustration with negative reviews, as they sought to transcend the pop-punk genre.

The band's career is marked by high-profile collaborations and unusual milestones. They performed at the 2010 Winter Olympics and the 2016 NHL Winter Classic, and they have maintained a consistent presence on the Vans Warped Tour for over two decades. Their work on the Scooby-Doo franchise, which began in 2002, became a defining element of their public identity, leading them to re-record the theme song in 2021.

Internal stability has been a recurring challenge. Bassist David Desrosiers departed the band multiple times, including a 2017 hiatus for depression and a final separation in 2020 following allegations of sexual misconduct. Despite these shifts—and the band's transition to independent status for their 2022 album Harder Than It Looks—Simple Plan has remained active, continuing to tour internationally and collaborate with peers like Sum 41 and State Champs.
