The Canadian rock band that has kept the same four members for over thirty years.
In short: Formed in Halifax in 1991, Sloan is a rare constant in the music industry. With an unaltered lineup for over three decades, the band is defined by a democratic approach where every member writes and sings their own songs, often swapping instruments live to accommodate their diverse individual contributions.
Sloan emerged from the Halifax art scene in January 1991, founded by Chris Murphy, Jay Ferguson, Andrew Scott, and Patrick Pentland. Their name originated from a friend, Jason Larsen, who was nicknamed 'Slow One' by his boss; the band agreed to use the name on the condition that Larsen appeared on the cover of their debut EP, Peppermint. This collaborative spirit became the band's hallmark. Unlike many groups where roles are rigid, Sloan’s members share songwriting duties and lead vocal responsibilities, with each member contributing at least one song to nearly every album they have released.
The band's history is marked by a refusal to conform to industry pressures. After their 1992 debut, Smeared, they faced friction with Geffen Records over the stylistic direction of their follow-up, Twice Removed. When the band refused to re-record the album to satisfy label expectations, Geffen withdrew promotional support. This independence eventually led them to release music through their own label, Murderecords. Their 1996 album, One Chord to Another, became their best-selling Canadian release, proving that their unconventional path could yield commercial success. They have since maintained a prolific output, releasing fourteen full-length albums as of 2025.
Live performances highlight the band's technical versatility. While Murphy typically plays bass and Pentland lead guitar, the members frequently switch instruments to suit the songwriter's needs. Since 2006, multi-instrumentalist Gregory Macdonald has supported them on keyboards. This dedication to their craft has earned them nine Juno Award nominations and a lasting legacy as one of Canada's most enduring bands. By consistently touring and revisiting their back catalog through deluxe reissues, Sloan has successfully navigated the changing landscape of the music industry while keeping their original creative partnership intact.
