A band named after a children's author with a dark edge
In short: Silverstein isn't just a name; it's a literary homage. The Canadian rock band took their identity from Shel Silverstein, the author of whimsical and often macabre children's poetry. This connection between childhood imagination and heavy music helped shape a career spanning over two decades of global touring.
Formed in Burlington, Ontario, in February 2000, Silverstein began as a project rooted in the band's childhood admiration for Shel Silverstein. While the author is known for works like 'Where the Sidewalk Ends,' the band translated that creative spirit into a heavy rock sound. Their early trajectory was marked by rapid evolution, moving from self-released EPs to signing with Victory Records in 2002. This period saw significant lineup shifts, including the recruitment of bassist Billy Hamilton, who was discovered on a local internet message board called 'The 905 Board.'
The band's commercial breakthrough came with their second studio album, Discovering the Waterfront (2005). Produced by Cameron Webb, the record signaled a shift toward faster-paced, energetic punk rock elements and a more mature vocal style from lead singer Shane Told. It was a pivotal moment that opened them to a wider audience, earning a Juno Award nomination and reaching No. 34 on the Billboard 2000 chart. Despite the success, the band's journey was often defined by the realities of the road, including a somber tribute to drummer John 'Beatz' Holohan, who was killed in a road accident during a 2005 tour.
Over the years, Silverstein has navigated the complexities of the music industry, moving through labels like Hopeless and Rise Records before joining UNFD. They have released thirteen studio albums, including the 2025 release Pink Moon. Their longevity is evidenced by a decade-long stable lineup that lasted until 2012, and a discography that balances high-concept projects—like the 2009 concept album A Shipwreck in the Sand—with live milestones, such as their 1000th show in Paris and a live DVD documenting their entire discography at the El Mocambo.
