The meteoric rise and enduring legacy of R&B sibling quartet Soul for Real
In short: Formed in 1992, the Dalyrimple brothers defined the mid-1990s R&B sound with their platinum-certified debut. Despite industry shifts and personal challenges, the group has navigated three decades of music, evolving from teenage sensations to independent artists while maintaining their connection to their roots in Wyandanch, New York.
Soul for Real, a quartet of brothers from Wyandanch, New York, burst onto the music scene in 1995 with their debut album, Candy Rain. Produced by Heavy D, the project produced two major hits: the title track, which reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100, and Every Little Thing I Do, which climbed to number 17. These successes solidified their place in the R&B landscape, blending youthful energy with polished production that resonated across the charts.
The group's trajectory shifted following their sophomore effort, For Life, released in 1996 under the production of Sean Combs. While they continued to record, subsequent projects faced distribution hurdles and changing market dynamics. By the late 1990s and early 2000s, the brothers began exploring independent avenues, forming their own labels and pursuing solo projects. This period of transition saw the members diversifying their interests, from production companies to culinary ventures in Las Vegas.
Personal and professional challenges marked the group's later years, including the 2009 legal issues involving member Brian Dalyrimple, which did not involve his brothers. Despite these setbacks, the remaining trio continued to perform and record. Their resilience was highlighted by a 2022 appearance on the documentary series Unsung and a 2023 ceremony where they received the Key to the City of Wyandanch. Today, the group remains active, releasing new music and honoring their history through both collaborative and individual creative pursuits.
