What happens when a scientific test identifies your perfect romantic match with total certainty?
In short: In the near-future world of the anthology series Soulmates, a company called Soul Connex offers a test that identifies your one true love with 100% accuracy. This premise forces characters to confront a difficult question: is love a matter of destiny, or is it ultimately a choice we make?
Created by William Bridges and Brett Goldstein, the American science fiction series Soulmates debuted on AMC on October 5, 2020. The show is set approximately 15 years into the future, a world where the Soul Connex test provides individuals with a definitive answer regarding their romantic fate. Participants receive one of two outcomes: they are either matched with a specific person or informed that their soulmate has not yet taken the test. This technological intervention serves as the catalyst for the series, which explores the complexities of human connection through self-contained episodes.
The series challenges conventional notions of romance by separating the concept of a soulmate from the idea of personal fulfillment. According to co-creator Will Bridges, a soulmate is defined as the person for whom one will feel the strongest, most undeniable love. However, Bridges notes that this intense connection does not necessarily equate to true happiness or indicate that the person is the best fit for an individual's life. The show explicitly rejects the idea that a soulmate is someone who will fix you, instead focusing on the tension between the inevitability of this scientific match and the reality of human agency.
Although the show was renewed for a second season in August 2020, it was ultimately cancelled in 2022. Despite its short run, the fictional universe established by the series continues to expand; the 2024 film All of You is set within the same narrative world. The anthology featured a diverse cast across its episodes, including performances by actors such as Kingsley Ben-Adir, David Costabile, Karima McAdams, Sonya Cassidy, Henry Goodman, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Charlie Heaton, Steven Mackintosh, and Betsy Brandt. By examining whether love is a predetermined path or a deliberate decision, the series remains a thought-provoking exploration of modern relationships.
