The South Asian Games: A Regional Olympic Tradition Shaping Subcontinental Sporting Identity
In short: Often described as the South Asian version of the Olympic Games, this quadrennial multi-sport event brings together athletes from seven nations. Governed by the South Asia Olympic Council, the competition has evolved significantly since its inception in 1984, reflecting the complex geopolitical and cultural dynamics of the region it represents.
The South Asian Games originated in 1984, with the inaugural event hosted in Kathmandu, Nepal. Initially, the competition followed a frequent schedule, occurring annually between 1984 and 1987, with the exception of 1986, a year prioritized for the Commonwealth and Asian Games. Following 1987, the event transitioned to a biennial format, though this schedule has faced occasional interruptions. The governing body, the South Asia Olympic Council, was established in 1983 to oversee these proceedings.
The participating nations include Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. While Afghanistan was a participant for four editions, the country withdrew from the South Asia Olympic Council following its final appearance in 2016. These games serve as one of five distinct subregional sporting events sanctioned by the Olympic Council of Asia, alongside the Central Asian, East Asian Youth, Southeast Asian, and West Asian Games.
A significant rebranding occurred in 2004 when the South Asian Sports Council opted to drop 'Federation' from the event's original title, the South Asian Federation Games. Officials argued that the term diminished the prestige of the competition and acted as a psychological barrier for potential spectators. By rebranding as simply the South Asian Games, organizers sought to elevate the event's profile and appeal.
The most recent iteration, the XIII South Asian Games, took place in 2019 across Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Janakpur. Spanning from 1 December to 10 December, the event highlighted the depth of regional talent, with 29 different sports having been contested throughout the history of the games. As a subregional pillar of the Olympic movement, the games continue to provide a critical platform for athletes to demonstrate excellence within their own geographic sphere.
