Sri Lanka’s record-breaking delegation arrives in Japan for the 2026 Asian Games
In short: With a massive contingent of 156 athletes, Sri Lanka has sent its largest-ever squad to the Asian Games. From the debut of modern pentathlon to the arrival of cricket powerhouses, the nation's presence in Aichi and Nagoya marks a significant milestone in its sporting history.
The 2026 Asian Games, hosted across Aichi and Nagoya, Japan, saw Sri Lanka participate for the 20th time since its 1951 debut. This edition was particularly notable for the scale of the delegation, which reached 156 athletes—the largest number the country has ever sent to a single edition of the games. The squad was composed of 100 men and 56 women, supported by 82 team officials. This historic participation follows a long lineage of competition, tracing back to the very first edition of the games held in 1951.
The opening ceremony was led by flagbearers Isiwaruna De Silva, a modern pentathlete, and Nuyara Fernando, an artistic gymnast. The games also featured a significant expansion in the variety of disciplines represented. For the first time, Sri Lanka made its Asian Games debut in the sport of modern pentathlon, qualifying two athletes, one of each gender. The gymnastics contingent featured two competitors, representing one male and one female athlete.
The roster featured a diverse range of competitive entries. In cricket, both the men's and women's teams qualified as ICC Full Members. The field hockey men's team also secured their place after a second-place finish at the 2026 Asian Games Qualifier in Bangkok, Thailand. Other notable entries included 3x3 basketball teams for both genders, seven boxers, and five wrestlers. The strength of the squad was evident in combat sports, with entries including three weightlifters and a single Wushu practitioner.
The delegation's breadth extended to several other individual and pair disciplines. The squad included athletes in badminton, gymnastics, squash, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, weightlifting, and Wushu. This massive mobilization reflects a period of significant athletic scale for the nation on the continental stage. The roster also included three squash players and two swimmers, ensuring a wide-ranging presence across the Japanese venues.
