The shifting borders and heavy industries of Southern Ontario
In short: Home to 36% of Canada's population, Southern Ontario is more than just a densely populated hub. From a history of smuggling during Prohibition to its role as a manufacturing powerhouse, the region's identity is shaped by its borders, its rivers, and its changing economy.
Southern Ontario serves as the province's most populous region, containing approximately 14.7 million people—about 94% of Ontario's total population. While the region's northern boundary is a subject of debate, its core lies south of Algonquin Park, transitioning from the coniferous forests of the north to southern deciduous forests. Some areas, such as the Muskoka and Parry Sound districts, sit in a transitional zone between the north and south.
The region's history is deeply intertwined with international relations and movement. Following the American Revolution, the arrival of United Empire Loyalists spurred significant colonization. The area later became a vital destination for those escaping slavery via the Underground Railroad and, following the 1919 enactment of Prohibition in the United States, became a notorious hub for alcohol smuggling across the border. Today, the region remains heavily connected to US states like Michigan and New York through major crossings like the Ambassador Bridge and the Peace Bridge.
Economically, the region is characterized by a mix of heavy industry and a growing service sector. While cities like Windsor, London, and St. Catharines have faced challenges from globalization and industry restructuring, others have pivoted. Toronto has evolved into a global financial center housing the Toronto Stock Exchange, while Ottawa serves as the national capital with a strong technology sector. This industrial landscape includes a massive manufacturing sector that, since the mid-2000s, has seen Ontario produce more vehicles annually than the US state of Michigan.
