In short: Beginning in 2014, Marvel Comics launched an ambitious crossover event that brought together nearly every iteration of Spider-Man created over five decades. Facing an existential threat from the life-draining Inheritors, these diverse heroes formed an army to protect the Great Web of Life and Destiny across infinite dimensions.

Conceived by writer Dan Slott, the Spider-Verse concept was born from his work on the 2010 video game Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. While that game featured only four versions of the hero, Slott envisioned a narrative that would unite all existing Spider-People. The event officially debuted in The Amazing Spider-Man No. 9 on November 5, 2014, following a series of introductory Edge of Spider-Verse stories that debuted characters like Spider-Gwen and Miguel O’Hara.

The central conflict pitted these heroes against the Inheritors, a family led by Solus and his children, including Morlun, Daemos, Jennix, Verna, Brix, and Bora. These villains hunted Spider-Totems across the multiverse to consume their life essence. The stakes were absolute: the Inheritors sought to fulfill a prophecy involving three specific totems—the Other, the Bride, and the Scion—which would secure their dominance. The Spider-Army, featuring characters like Spider-UK, Silk, and the Superior Spider-Man, fought to prevent this collapse of the multiverse.

The storyline spanned 20 publications, concluding in The Amazing Spider-Man No. 14. While the series earned praise for its pacing and action, some critics found the finale anticlimactic. Despite this, the event became a cultural touchstone, inspiring external media such as the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe entry Spider-Man: No Way Home. It also established a lasting legacy, leading to subsequent sequels like Spider-Geddon and the formation of the Web Warriors team.
