The Bee Gees reached their commercial peak with an album that defined an era
In short: Released in 1979, Spirits Having Flown solidified the Bee Gees' status as global superstars following their massive success with the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. Despite selling over 20 million copies worldwide and producing three consecutive US number-one singles, the album marked the end of the band's most triumphant period.
Spirits Having Flown, released in January 1979, represented a pivotal moment for the Bee Gees. Coming off the cultural phenomenon of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, the group faced intense pressure to avoid being typecast solely as a disco act. To counter this, they prioritized ballads like 'Too Much Heaven' as lead singles. The production was notably ambitious, featuring 27 layers of vocals on 'Too Much Heaven' alone and guest appearances from the horn section of the band Chicago, who were recording nearby at Criteria Studios.
The creative process behind the album was heavily concentrated on Barry Gibb, who worked alongside co-producer Albhy Galuten and engineer Karl Richardson. Internal dynamics were strained; Maurice Gibb struggled with alcoholism and chronic back pain, leading to diminished contributions and instances where his recorded bass parts were replaced without his knowledge. Robin Gibb, meanwhile, saw his lead vocal contributions reduced to a single track, 'Living Together'. Despite these internal tensions, the album achieved massive commercial success, topping charts in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, and Sweden.
Critical reception was polarized. While some reviewers praised the record's 'intricate and ambitious production,' others, such as The Globe and Mail, criticized the sound as 'pasteurized' and 'emaciated.' The album's success was short-lived, however. By the early 1980s, the group faced a severe downturn and a near-total radio blackout in America, which Robin Gibb later described as a form of 'censorship.' Nevertheless, the album remains a landmark, having been certified platinum by the RIAA and winning Best Pop/Rock Album at the 1980 American Music Awards.
