In short: Formed from the ashes of Spacemen 3, Spiritualized redefined 1990s guitar music. From contractual disputes to surviving serious illness, the band's journey through neo-psychedelia and gospel-infused rock has left an indelible mark on the evolution of dream pop and post-rock.

Spiritualized was created in Rugby, Warwickshire, during 1990 after Peter Kember and Jason Pierce, co-frontmen of Spacemen 3, fell out. To establish this ensemble, Pierce brought in various Spacemen 3 musicians, specifically guitarist Mark Refoy, drummer Jonny Mattock, and bassist Will Carruthers. Interestingly, the band's name was not a religious statement but an adaptation of text found on the back label of a bottle of Pernod. The group's formation was complicated by a legal clause requiring them to maintain the existing Spacemen 3 recording contract with Dedicated Records. Early members included keyboardist Steve Evans, who was later replaced by Kate Radley.

The band's career has been marked by both critical triumphs and internal friction. Their 1997 masterpiece, Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, was named Album of the Year by NME. Yet, prosperity caused tension; after promoting that record, Sean Cook, Damon Reece, and Michael Mooney considered striking due to insufficient wages and fees. In a move that surprised the music press, the new contracts drawn up between Pierce and the musicians were later used to fire them. Following this dispute, the departing musicians formed a new group called Lupine Howl. The band's first release was a 1990 cover of a track by The Troggs.

The band's musical identity has remained fluid, spanning space rock, neo-psychedelia, and experimental rock. Their work was instrumental in developing the dream pop and post-rock subgenres of the 1990s, influencing artists like Sigur Rós. Throughout their history, the band has navigated significant personal and professional hurdles, including Pierce's serious liver disease in 2005 and the manufacturing delays that pushed the release of their ninth album, Everything Was Beautiful, from February to April 2022. Their sound incorporates gospel, blues, and soul influences, particularly on the Amazing Grace album. In 2009, they performed their 1997 classic in its entirety for the All Tomorrow's Parties series.
