From ancient Indigenous roots to a modern hub for extreme outdoor adventure
In short: Nestled at the edge of Howe Sound, Squamish has transformed from a traditional Indigenous homeland into a premier destination for climbers and adventurers. Once defined by its heavy forestry and railway operations, this British Columbia community is now a thriving center for outdoor recreation and tourism.
The Squamish people have inhabited this region for thousands of years, with the traditional name for the downtown site being Keh Kait. While the modern town grew significantly during the 1910s with the construction of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway, the area's history is deeply rooted in Indigenous oral stories and archaeological evidence.
The local economy has undergone a massive shift. For decades, industry was dominated by forestry, with Western Forest Products' pulp mill serving as the town's largest employer until it permanently closed on January 26, 2006. Before that, International Forest Products operated a sawmill and logging business. Today, the economy leans heavily toward tourism and outdoor recreation, driven by the area's proximity to Vancouver and Whistler.
Adventure enthusiasts are drawn to the region's dramatic landscape, particularly the Stawamus Chief. This granite massif offers over 300 climbing routes, many of which require traditional protection. The broader Squamish area is even more vast, containing more than 1,500 climbing routes across locations like the Smoke Bluffs and Shannon Falls. The region has also emerged as a global bouldering destination, with local guidebooks describing over 2,500 problems.
The community's unique geography also supports diverse activities, from kiteboarding on the Squamish Spit to ultramarathons like the Squamish 50. This combination of rugged terrain and accessible transit has made the area a popular refuge for those seeking to escape the high cost of living in nearby metropolitan centers.
