A drunken mistake on a cigarette packet named a major rock album
In short: When Oasis frontman Noel Gallagher spotted a phrase on a two-pound coin, he scribbled it down while intoxicated. He awoke to find he had misspelled the title of his band's fourth studio album, Standing on the Shoulder of Giants. The record marked a turbulent, experimental shift for the group.
Released on 28 February 2000, Standing on the Shoulder of Giants represented a departure from the Britpop sound that defined Oasis's first three albums. Following the 1998 Be Here Now tour, the band entered an extended hiatus during which Noel Gallagher sought sobriety. This period of reflection and the subsequent no-drugs policy in the studio created significant friction, leading to the departure of founding members Paul Arthurs and Paul McGuigan. The album was recorded at Château de La Colle Noire in France, where Noel took on the role of playing nearly all instruments himself, incorporating drum loops, sitars, and synthesisers to craft a modern, psychedelic aesthetic.
The album's title is a misquoted reference to Sir Isaac Newton. Noel Gallagher famously discovered the phrase on a two-pound coin in a pub and, while under the influence, wrote it on a cigarette packet. He accidentally transcribed it as Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, rather than the original plural, and also mistakenly wrote a bum title instead of album title. Despite the chaotic origins, the record achieved commercial success, debuting at number one in the UK and becoming the 16th-fastest-selling album in British chart history, moving over 310,000 copies in its first week.
Critical reception was mixed, with some commentators praising the band's maturity and cohesion, while others lamented the loss of their earlier, energetic sparkle. The album featured Liam Gallagher's first songwriting credit, Little James, and tracks inspired by Noel's struggle with panic attacks during his transition to sobriety. Although Noel later expressed regret over the project in a 2011 interview, claiming he lacked the desire to make music at the time, the album remains a pivotal, transitional moment in the band's history. It was the first Oasis record not designed by Brian Cannon and faced distribution hurdles, including a refusal by Walmart to stock it due to profanity in the opening track's title.
